NYC’s Five Most Popular Museums

One of the countless attributes that New York, New York is well known for are its many incredible museums. Most obviously there are the art museums like The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and the Guggenheim, but there are also many other kinds of museums in Manhattan like the Natural History Museum and Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum.

What follows is a short description of the five museums I just mentioned so that you can find out which of these museums you would most like to visit when you go to Manhattan. Free entry to all five of these museums is a feature of the New York Pass.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art – This huge art history museum is usually referred to as just “The Met” and while it is primarily an art museum it is also really much more than just that. It is a wonderful place to check out for anyone who’s into history. The big drawback to this museum is also its biggest positive; it’s so big that it’s a little bit overwhelming. It’s impossible to really see everything in one day.

The Museum of Modern Art – The MoMA is aimed at people who are quite knowledgable about modern art. It features works by Henri Rousseau, Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, and Salvador Dali. I would have to say that the MoMA isn’t as “kid friendly” as some of the others on here. If you have kids you may want to go to another museum.

The Guggenheim Museum – The Guggenheim is probably more well known for its incredible architectural design than the artwork within it. It was built by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright in the late 1950s. It is certainly worth going inside and checking it out (and of course the great artwork!) It is not as much of an overwhelming experience as the other art museums on the list.

The Natural History Museum – For most people I would say this should be the number one choice. Not only is it very “family friendly” but that I think it’s more interesting to a larger group of people. I really don’t see how anyone can’t be curious to see a dinosaur’s skeleton up close. It is amazing to stand next to the huge skeletons.

Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum – This is a very “kid friendly” place. Your kids will probably get a real kick out of seeing wax versions of famous people (both those alive and those no longer with us.) It is pretty enjoyable for adults as well. It’s a good choice if you’re in the mood to be silly rather than serious.

The New York Pass includes free tickets to all five of these tourist attractions.

Regardless of whether you want to visit any of these museums or not, you should definitely make use of the New York City Hotel Deals website to find the best deals on luxury hotels in New York.

Visit The Museum Of Modern Art In Manhattan

If you happen to be a follower of fine art then there may not be a better place to check out in the entire US than the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan.

MoMA, located on West 53rd St. in Midtown Manhattan, is among the most popular and highly respected art museums in the US. About two million people visit it. While that is a good amount of visitors; it should be noted that it’s actually about half as many as visit NYC’s most popular museums the Met and the Natural History Museum. I think the popularity of these other two museums is due to them being more “family oriented.”

The Museum of Modern Art first opened in the fall of 1929 shortly after the stock market crash that started the Great Depression. The idea for the museum was developed by Abby Rockefeller and two of her friends. It opened at its current location in 1939.

MoMA’s Van Gogh and Picasso exhibitions in the 1930s were instrumental in building up the fantastic reputations they hold to this day as some of the most influential painters in the “modern era.”

Today you can see many famous paintings at MoMA including The Starry Night by Van Gogh, The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau, The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali, The Dance by Henri Matisse, Love Song by Giorgio De Chirico, as well as work by Jackson Pollock, Andrew Wyeth, Frida Kahlo, and Yoko Ono.

If you are not a native New Yorker and you’re planning on visiting MoMA and New York’s other museums on a trip to NYC then you may want to think about purchasing a New York Pass which includes entry to MoMA among over 50 other tourist activities. It’s a huge time and money saver if you are planning on taking a really big chunk out of the “Big Apple” on your trip.
